Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group between 10th and 12th April 2006 at the former East Midlands Electricity Board sports field site, Aylestone Road, Leicester on behalf of E-ON UK plc. The aim of the evaluation was to assess the impact of the proposed development of the site on any surviving archaeological remains, and in particular any remnants of the Raw Dykes Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM). The evaluation consisted of two machine excavated trenches measuring 20m x 1.8m. Remnants of the Raw Dykes SAM were not observed in either trench and no other features of archaeological significance were recorded. Natural gravel was overlain in both trenches by post-medieval land-raising dumps. Post-medieval truncation appeared to be general over the site, and had removed any earlier archaeological deposits. A comparison of heights between the SAM and the evaluation trenches showed that the natural ground rose to the north, making it unlikely that the Roman earthwork passed through the area covered by the evaluation trenches. In addition to the evaluation trenches, a borehole survey was conducted along the eastern periphery of the site. This revealed [ and ]
