Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in advance of construction of 5 units of local needs housing at The Orchard, Little Bray Lane, Brayford. The site occupies a west-facing slope above a tributary of the River Bray, at an elevation of 150m a.O.D., and was formerly under pasture. The underlying geology comprises Paleozoic slaty mud- and siltstones. Removal of topsoil revealed the upper part of the site to be covered by extensive deposits of post-medieval colluvium (agriculturally derived hillwash). Trenches were excavated through the colluvium in order to establish the presence, or otherwise, of archaeological features or deposits. None were present. Post-medieval agricultural soils lay directly on the natural substrate. |
