Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was maintained during groundwork for an extension to the property on land at The Workshop, Pipe Passage, Lewes, East Sussex. A substantial deposit of imported garden soil was found across the site, indicating that the ground level had been built up, probably at the time a mid nineteenth century row of cottages were constructed to the north. Below this a nineteenth brick wall foundation and an 18th century buried soil deposit were identified. To the north of the site two late nineteenth century -modern wall footings were revealed, most probably relating to the use of the site for allotment gardens and greenhouses. |
