Abstract: |
A programme of salvage recording was undertaken by Birmingham University Field Archaeology Unit on behalf of Crosby Homes on the site of an early gasworks at Gas Street, Birmingham, West Midlands. The work consisted of two main elements. The first comprised architectural recording of walls that had to be rebuilt as part of the overall refurbishment of the grade II listed Retort House and Retort House Extension. The second element of work consisted of a watching brief of groundwork for several new blocks of flats over three former gas holders situated on land to the south of Retort House. Features recorded included remains of a canopy for a coke shade, arches supporting retorts in the Retort House, possible retort supports in the Retort House extension and a tar tank. |
