Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out by Birmingham University Field Archaeology Unit in August 2002 of a site in Birmingham City Centre between Albert Street and Fazeley Street. The assessment was carried out ahead of proposed development of the site for a new city library. The assessment examined the available documentary and cartographic evidence and incorporated a limited site visit in order to identify features, or potential features, of archaeological or historical value. It showed that the site ahd been part of the Little Park in the 16th century and earlier and had not been developed until the late 18th /early 19th centuries, when it became built up with domestic structures. During the 19th century it became more industrial and commercial in chartacter. It was considered that ther may be potential for survival of dep[osits relating to a former boundary ditch and it was noted that there were several buildings of interest on the site. |
