Abstract: |
The evaluation identified archaeological remains of prehistoric origins through to the late medieval and post-medieval development of the street frontage. Early archaeological remains identified within the trench comprised ditches and possible postholes potentially of comparable date to Iron Age and Roman evidence recovered from the Root Hill gravel pit to the rear of the investigation area. The residual artefact assemblage supported the evidence for early activity in the area and comprised a Neolithic / Bronze Age flint tool potentially from a disturbed burial environment, a fragment of Roman septaria and a coin dating to the 4th century. These early archaeological remains did not conform to the alignment of the current town layout but were superseded by a boundary ditch orientated north-west to south-east parallel with Victoria Avenue. This feature may date to as early as the Roman period and may represent a road side ditch, all subsequent archaeological remains mimicked this medieval occupational remains that likely began to encroach upon the road as Prittlewell developed. At the time the market was granted in the 13th century the street frontage would have comprised a series of sunken floored timber framed buildings which were replaced by more substantial structures such as Swan Hall as the market developed and Prittlewell became more affluent. There were no surviving archaeological remains of Swan Hall having been removed by a large cutting event truncating much of the archaeology towards the south-west limit of the trench during the post medieval period. A 0.60 metres length of foundation with associated floor surfaces aligned with the back wall of Swan Hall survived representing Deeds Cottages. Further remains of the cottages appear to have been comprehensively removed by a combination landscaping and reclamation coupled with Victorian backyard rubbish pits. |
