Abstract: |
This report presents the results of a scheme of archaeological building recording at Eckland Bridge Works, Millhouse Green, Sheffield. The works were established as an umbrella factory by Samuel Fox in 1866, on the site of a former paper mill. The site now comprises the works buildings to the south, with a complex of farm buildings and a single residence (Burkes House) to the north. The recording work found evidence for the development of the site throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries. It was evident, however, that the continued use of the site had led to extensive internal and external alterations. A fire in the 1980s had also further compromised the historic integrity of the site. |
