Abstract: |
Evaluation and small-scale excavation along route of road upgrade on west coast of Lewis. The objective of the project were to test previously identified areas of deep peat to establish the potential for buried remains. There were also a number of sections of stone dyke to be tested by excavation of sections through them to establsih their date. The results of the work were that the areas of deep peat did not necessarily correspond to that previously recorded, and that the peat appeared to be basin peat rather than blanket peat. It is unlikely to mask any earlier features. The section of stone dyke and path were shown to post-date the formation of the peat, and date to the post-medieval period. |
