Abstract: |
Headland Archaeology was commissioned by Ada Properties Ltd to undertake a programme of archaeological works in connection with planning conditions issued by Scottish Borders Council. The work consisted of a survey of the historic buildings that form part of the development site. The project involves the conversion of existing farm buildings for housing and the construction of additional housing on adjacent plots. The steading was founded in the 18th century as a tenant farm, probably slightly later than Swinside Hall Farm and Swinside Townfoot Farm. The original group included a farmhouse (now demolished) and a byre, barn and stable. Later additions included a large cart shed and an additional byre as well as hay/grain lofts and a steam power plant and thresher. The farm is part of a locally significant architectural group and is characterised by rubble masonry, slate roofs and an agricultural character |
