Abstract: |
The site lies on the edge of the historic core of Heavitree and was undeveloped until the beginning of the 20th century. The archaeological potential of the site lies in its proximity to Heavitree Road, the alignment of which suggests it is Roman in date, and in its prominent position on the ridgeline between Heavitree and Exeter during the Civil War siege of 1645-46.Although the assessment highlighted that the majority of the site was subjected to extensive quarrying prior to the 19th century, it was considered possible that archaeological features and/or deposits might survive within the footprint of the western and southwestern development. The site area was an irregular shape and measured approximately 1.90ha. A watching brief was maintained during the excavation of the foundations of the two western most blocks (see attached plan). These were relatively shallow and had been built within a layer of modern made ground relating to 20th century buildings and a car park. A service trench for a new gas main along the southern edge of the access road was also monitored. This was cut through asphalt and hardcore, before revealing natural subsoil at a depth of 0.3m below current ground level. |
