Abstract: |
This project presents the results of the historic building recording. This includes the results of documentary and cartographic research and sufficient historical background to place the building in context. Silver Wood was built just before 1935 as part of the speculative development in the suburbs of north London between the First and Second World Wars. The current house has been re-modelled and extended, although stylistically it retains much of its original character. An interesting mix of moderne and vernacular, the house is typical of the restrained style of the new suburbs. Although the externally the building lends itself to modern influences, the main entrance and internal design of the house are typical of the Tudorbethan style of the 20th-century vernacular revival. The function and layout of the rooms within the original house are typical of a suburban house built in the 1930s and mirror the social changes between the wars. |
