Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was conducted in 2007 by AOC Archaeology Group at ten locations in and around the George Downing Estate, roughly between Cazenove Road and Northwold Road in Stoke Newington. Site code GDI07. The aim of the evaluation as to assess the impact of the proposed development on any surviving archaeology. 10 test pits were machine-excavated, one trench and four evaluation pits were also recorded. Natural gravels and sands were identified between 20.20m OD and 22.55m OD above heavy London Clays. Sealing the gravels were layers of made ground containing 20th century building materials and deposits of disturbed modern topsoils. No archaeological remains or residual finds were identified within any of the trenches. Stoke Newington Sands were revealed within evaluation pit 14, but no evidence of the Palaeolithic knapping platform previously recorded in the 19th century was found.
