Abstract:
Between January and March 2005, Archaeological Solutions Ltd undertook an archaeological excavation on land at Fordham Road, Isleham, Cambridgeshire. The site lies to the south of the historic core of the village, on the corner of Station Road and Fordham Road. An evaluation carried out by Cambridgeshire County Council Archaeological Field Unit (CCC AFU) in August 2004 revealed a number of postholes, several medieval pits, a ditch and a quarry pit (Kenney 2004) The excavation identified evidence of clunch extraction and processing features with associated structures, dating predominantly to the medieval period, and continuing on a smaller scale into the late medieval/post-medieval period. Phase 1 comprised two buildings, one a SFB, the other an apsidal ended structure with a tile floor, lying mostly outside of the excavated area. Neither could be dated with precision but both pre-dated Phase 2 features. Phase 2 was the main period of activity at the site, with features including quarry pits, tanks for clunch soaking, six wells, a possible SFB and a post built building with associated fence lines and rubbish pits set within an enclosure. Phase 3 was less well represented and seemed to present, along with sparse pits and postholes. Several features remained undated; significant among these were a set of linear features which may be the wheel ruts of carts and a cluster of postholes possibly representing a second post built building.
