Abstract:
In July 2008 North Pennines Archaeology Ltd were commissioned to undertake a rapid desk-based assessment and archaeological watching brief during the course of groundworks for the construction of a car park at the Grade II* Listed Castlegate House, Castlegate, Cockermouth. The rapid desk-based assessment revealed that the area of the market place, with the church to the south and castle to the north, may have been the focus of an early medieval settlement. Cartographic sources showed that the area to be directly impacted by the development was occupied by gardens and orchards throughout the 19th and 20th century, and the potential remained for medieval or post-medieval occupational evidence to survive. The proceding watching brief covered an area of c. 100m, and was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.86m. No archaeological deposits or features were revealed by the groundworks.
