Abstract:
In July 2008, Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried out an archaeological evaluation of Land at the Manor, Church Lane, Haddenham, Cambridgeshire (NGR TL 3919 8653). The evaluation was commissioned in advance of works to redevelop the site, constructing new residential dwellings with associated access, landscaping and services. The desk-based assessment showed potential for multi-phase remains. Prehistoric activity is well represented in the parish of Haddenham and an archaeological evaluation indicated that prehistoric activity may be in close proximity to the site. Similarly, evidence of Roman occupation has been discovered around the parish and during an evaluation at West End suggesting Roman remains relating to a settlement may be encountered. Anglo-Saxon Haddenham is thought to have originated in the 6th century and the site may lie close to the settlement which may have accompanied the cemetery, c. 250m south east of the site. With a more prominent settlement in the Saxo-Norman period, Haddenham developed in the medieval age into a substantial settlement with three manors and the 13th century Holy Trinity Church. Post-medieval Haddenham was well populated and as a result, prospered in this period. The trial trench evaluation was carried out following a geophysical survey and revealed eight features, including a large ditch, and a large sand quarry pit which truncated the northeast quarter of the site area. Two 19th and 20th century garden features were also recorded, one of which was pond constructed from 18th and 19th century gravestones.
