Abstract:
The Heritage Network was commissioned by Bellway Homes to monitor demolition groundwork on the site of the former Dixons Distribution Centre, Martins Way, Stevenage, Hertfordshire. The previous buildings on the site had been demolished to ground level prior to the start of the monitoring. The site is located immediately to the north of the late Iron Age / early Roman enclosed settlement at Lobs Hole. The present project involved monitoring the removal of areas of concrete and tarmac hard standing, together with 39 concrete foundation pads and a number of concrete piles, as well as ground reduction across the site. The monitoring project has demonstrated that previous construction works on the site have caused extensive disturbance to the stratigraphy. The demolition groundwork did not reveal any surviving in-situ topsoil or subsoil on the site, and the evidence indicates that such soils were removed during previous phases of development . No archaeological features. or deposits, were observed during the course of the monitoring fieldwork. No artefacts predating the second half of the 20th century were recovered.
