Abstract:
This report has been prepared by MAP Archaeological Consultancy Ltd under instruction from The Fitzwilliam (Wentworth) Estate to appraise the buildings at, and to assess the Historical and Archaeological background and the impact of the proposed development at Manor Farmstead, Church Street, Greasbrough, South Yorkshire. The Farmstead comprises two entrances onto Church Street, one into the farmyard, and one gate into the front garden of Manor Farm, there is also an entrance from Cinderbridge Road. The buildings within the Development Area include an eighteenth century barn with seventeenth century timbers with attached nineteenth century horse engine house, the farmhouse possibly eighteenth century in date, two further nineteenth century barns, two nineteenth century cartsheds and three modern farm buildings, pig stys and outbuildings. The Site of the Proposed Development is currently derelict and overgrown and the buildings in a state of disrepair with visible signs of vandalism and arson. The Proposed Development Site is located within the Greasbrough Designated Conservation Area. There is a Grade II Listed Building and two sites on the South Yorkshire Sites and Monuments Record within the Proposed Development Area (the eighteenth century barn with nineteenth century horse engine house). The Proposed Development borders to the north onto the Wentworth Woodhouse Registered Park and Garden (GD2167 Grade II*).
