Abstract: |
The site's location at western fringe of the floodplain of the River Exe suggested considerable potential for buried remains of palaeochannels or leats/watercourses associated with the monastic house of Cowick Priory, the presumed site of which lies approximately 300m or so to the north west. The aim of the work was to determine the nature and extent of any surviving archaeological deposits that may be affected by the proposed development. The surface strip was primarily intended to remove vegetation and level the site for marking out, and revealed no archaeological features. The topsoil across the site yielded abundant finds of 19th-20th century. The service and foundation trenching revealed no archaeological features or deposits of archaeological significance. |
