Abstract: |
Evaluation of soil storage areas and watching brief within the boundary of the new Glencorse Water Treatment Works. The soil storage areas cover 9.8ha and two fields. To achieve a coverage of 5%, forty-seven trial trenches were excavated which examined 5255m². The evaluation revealed that the remains of rig and furrow agriculture survived in one field, and in one trench, these overlay a linear ditch. The terminal of the ditch was located by trenching and it contained the carbonised remains of crop processing residues. Medieval pottery was recovered from an overlying soil layer. In the second field, a mortared stone culvert, 5m in length was recorded, fed by a linear ditch. This was sealed by a soil deposit containing 18-19 century finds. This feature may assist in controlling the flow of water towards a mill further downstream. A watching brief within the WTW took place around the Roman Fortlet discovered during an earlier evaluation (cfaarch1-42439). This revealed no additional remains. |
