Abstract:
During 2004 Albion Archaeology undertook archaeological salvage investigations at Kempston Box End quarry which is situated within an area of known archaeological importance on the northern edge of an extensive Roman settlement. These investigations were the result of the discovery of human remains by a member of the public. Quarrying operations had been undertaken for several months before the disturbance of human bones was reported. However, a 5 day halt in extraction works was agreed and the CAO of BCC provided limited funds to enable archaeological salvage investigations to take place. The archaeological remains encountered showed at least two phases of activity. In the early Roman period a N-S ditched enclosure system was established which contained at least two enclosures defined by E-W ditches. Evidence of activity within the southern enclosure comprised a well, a possible kiln and large areas of pitting. In the later Roman period the enclosure system continued in use but the earlier N-S boundary was replaced by two parallel ditches that are suggestive of a trackway. The southern enclosure continued in use and a cemetery was established from which over 30 graves were identified. Of these, 26 were found to contain the remains of single inhumation burials, of which 8 comprised complete skeletons. The orientation of the graves was predominately E-W, however a small number were found on N-S and NE-SW alignments and were notably positioned on the periphery of the cemetery. At least ten of the burials had been placed in coffins. Also within the cemetery were arrangements of postholes that may have formed two or three post structures associated with the graves and some may have marked individual graves.
