Abstract: |
Excavations in advance of the construction of an extension to the Southgate Hotel were undertaken by Exeter Archaeology on behalf of the Moorfield Group during August and September 2008. Elements of the town's extra-mural Roman, medieval and Civil War defensive ditches were exposed. Although the earlier ditches were heavily truncated, the investigations have helped to clarify the nature of Exeter's defences with this part of the defensive circuit, close to the South Gate. A large quantity of disarticulated human bone, with a small number of individual burials, were recovered from the soils of the former Trinity Burial Ground which occupied the site between the late 17th and early 19th centuries. |
