Abstract: |
This archaeological evaluation consisted of the excavation of three trial trenches on the site of Newport Ironworks (HER 1822). Three trenches were excavated. Trench 1 measured 20m x 2m with Trenches 2 and 3 measuring 30m x 2m. Archaeological features associated with the ironworks sites were well preserved and present in each trench beneath approximately 1m of imported backfill material. The trenches included concrete and flagged floor surfaces, service pipes, machine bases, brick structures and a possible oven. There were serious health and safety issues at the site including trench instability and fibrous asbestos in the backfill meaning that archaeological recording could not be completed in certain cases. However the report for the work provides a clear account of the excavation and interprets the results with reference to previously published sources on the ironworks. |
