Abstract:
An assessment excavation was carried out by Chris Butler Archaeological Services at Tower House, Rye during November 2008, during which a total of four evaluation trenches were excavated. Two trenches located in a car parking area revealed a deep stratigraphy of Post Medieval layers dating from late 19th century through to the late 17th century. Below this were deposits dating from the 14th to 15th century, and a possible ditch that been finally filled-in in the mid 16th to early 17th century. A small trench in the garden also revealed a similar stratigraphy but at a shallower level, whilst the fourth trench encountered a large later 19th century kitchen midden. Although the excavation did not locate any confirmed medieval features, it did demonstrate that there was a deep Post Medieval stratigraphy with the potential for in-situ early Post Medieval and Medieval features and deposits with good preservation, albeit at lower levels. The kitchen midden has the potential to provide the best 19th- century assemblage from the town to date.
