Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken to the north of Exminster on a section of water mains rehabilitation works. The pipe-line corridor extended along the northern edge of the M5 motorway (the motorway in this section having been cut through the existing hillsides) and was parallel with it for a distance of c. 900m. The pipe-line corridor varied from 5m to 15m in width, depending on the topography, and was monitored after the topsoil was removed. The earlier works for the construction of the motorway involved an extremely wide and deep cut through the hill, followed by a redeposition of material as part of a landscaping along the sides of the cut. The pipe-line corridor along much of the route was therefore several metres below the original ground level prior to Motorway construction. A natural degraded red breccia was recorded in both the sides and the base along much of the pipe-line corridor although a red sandy clay was observed in areas along the western part of the route. No archaeological features were observed or finds recovered. |
