Abstract:
In order to assess the archaeological risk posed by a proposal to redevelop the site of the North Hertfordshire College Centre for the Arts, Willian Road, Hitchin, the Heritage Network was commissioned by North Hertfordshire College to undertake a desk-based archaeological assessment of the site. On the basis of the evidence consulted, there would appear to be a low to moderate risk that remains of Iron Age, Roman and Medieval date might be encountered on the present site, subject to disturbance by activity in the post-medieval and modern periods. The map and aerial photographic evidence shows that the site has undergone significant changes since the early 19th century. The various phases of farm buildings, which occupied the site prior to the construction of the present buildings, are also considered to be of potential interest. The existing buildings are not cellared and do not appear to have significantly large or deep foundations, suggesting a reasonable potential for the preservation of archaeological remains across the whole site.
