Abstract:
In order to assess the archaeological risk posed by the construction of a number of garden features on land at Epcombs, Hertingfordbury, Herts, the Heritage Network was commissioned to undertake a desk-based archaeological assessment and evaluation. This was followed by a watching brief on associated service trenches and the excavation of the carp pond. The study area is located to the north of Hertingfordbury village. It lies on gently sloping ground either side of the river Mimram and formed part of an early medieval estate recorded in the Domesday Book. The desk-based assessment indicated a high potential overall that archaeological remains from the later prehistoric to modern period would be damaged, destroyed or otherwise affected by its development. The subsequent evaluation and watching brief demonstrated that the land between the house and the river had been built up, probably in the post-medieval period. The natural clay was not reached during the fieldwork. A number of features of post-medieval date, including a Victorian well and an 18th century wall were recorded, relating to various post-17th century phases of remodelling of the house and estate. Unstratified late medieval pottery sherds were also recovered.
