Abstract: |
In 2006 Archaeological Services and Consultancy Ltd (ASC) carried out a watching brief at Elm Tree Farm, Pirton, Hertfordshire in response to proposals for the construction of 12 private dwellings. The site lies on the eastern side of the medieval village immediately north of Hambridge Way. The archaeological evidence within and around Pirton indicates that settlements have been established close to the site from the Iron Age onwards. The medieval village, which developed from an Anglo-Saxon settlement, is centred on a 12th century motte and bailey castle and a contemporaneous church within the bailey precinct. The earliest archaeological remains revealed on Elm Tree Farm are medieval ditches, which suggests that the site was largely peripheral to pre-medieval settlement activity, but that it may have been incorporated into the agricultural system by the later middle ages. Much of the archaeological activity on the site appears to have been associated with the farm and is of fairly recent date. A few post-medieval features were encountered, a closer date for which was not possible due to the paucity of associated finds. |
