Abstract:
In October 2007 Archaeological Services and Consultancy Ltd (ASC) carried out an archaeological desk-based assessment and historic building assessment of a site at 76 High Street, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. The Conservative Club, which is a Grade II listed building, dates from the late 16th/early 17th century and has modern extensions to the rear and the north of the property. The early range, on the street front, retains some timber framing and the rear range of the first half of the 17th century is brick built with segmental and triangular pediments. The interior of the building has a significant number of Jacobean features including a dogleg staircase with hollow obelisk pendants, panelled rooms and early examples of panelled doors. The site is recorded as having belonged to Thomas Stanborough in 1363 and in later years by the Mitchell family. In the 19th century the house was used as a doctors surgery and later for training servants. It was acquired by the Conservative Club in the early 20th century when one of its founder members, Dr Wells, leased the building to them.
