Abstract: |
In May 2007 Archaeological Solutions Ltd carried out a historic building appraisal at Cole Green Works, Cole Green, Hertfordshire. Four buildings were appraised, all of which date to the mid 19th to early 20th century. Building 1 is the principal building on the site, which would once have housed a saw-mill and its associated machinery. Cartographic sources indicate that it was built at some point between 1838 and 1879 when it is identified on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map as a saw-mill. Buildings 2 and 3 are of mid 19th century date. Building 3 suffered less extensive fire damage and much of the original fabric still survives. Building 4 comprises two parts: the northern part was clearly originally built as an open-sided shelter, no doubt for the storage of timber, and the south part, originally open on its south side probably served as a cart or vehicle shed. The buildings are depicted in their present form by the 1923 Ordnance Survey map, although a building of similar proportions to the northern section is depicted on earlier cartographic sources. |
