Abstract: |
It is proposed that a Heritage Centre is to be situated within disused farm buildings at Camp Farm, Maryport, Cumbria. Groundbreaking elements of the project include an access road, car park and play area. A desk-based assessment and invasive evaluation of these parts of the development was carried out. The desk-based assessment indicated that there are no known heritage sites within these areas. Recent geophysical work in the area shows a number of faint anomalies which included both linear possible ditches and points of possible burning. Nineteenth century maps show field boundaries which were abandoned when Camp Farm was built in 1866. Nine trenches were excavated in the evaluation. One of the field boundary ditches was recorded but no significant archaeological remains were present. Finds were restricted to a possible flint thumbnail scraper and 19th century pottery in the field boundary ditch. |
