Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology during groundworks associated with the construction of a new sewer pipe in farmland south-east of Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire. Three prehistoric worked flints were recovered as residual and unstratified finds. Two Roman pits containing cremated human adult remains were identified. These might be associated with a known small Roman settlement previously identified in Stanford in the Vale. The proximity of this settlement was also reflected in the presence of residual Roman pottery found within later features and recovered from the topsoil. A pit or ditch terminus of possible Anglo-Saxon date (5th to 9th centuries AD) was identified. Two ditches, possibly field boundaries or furrows, were also identified, one of which contained pottery dating from the 11th to 13th centuries. One of these ditches lay partially beneath, and on the alignment of, an existing footpath. This footpath conforms to the pattern of field boundaries extending back from the western bank of the River Ock and it is possible that the ditch was in fact a holloway leading from the village to the river. |
