Abstract:
In November 2005 North Pennines Archaeology Ltd undertook a rapid desk-based assessment and archaeological evaluation at Suttle House, Wigton Road, Carlisle, Cumbria. The assessment concluded that, whilst there was circumstantial evidence for prehistoric activity in the vicinity, and evidence of Roman activity in the form of an adjacent Roman road, there was no direct evidence for activity on the site before the 18th century with the onset of Inclosure. This was when Suttle House was constructed. The subsequent evaluation uncovered the remains of a substantial post-medieval pond in the north-west corner of the site, known to be of 19th century origin. No further archaeological remains were encountered.
