Abstract:
An area of 153 sq m was excavated on the site of the Old Garage, Redgrave on the development areas street frontage. A further part of the street frontage was monitored. The site lies within the villages medieval core, between surviving medieval/late medieval timber framed houses. Structural evidence was found for the rear wall of a sill beamed medieval structure, aligned with and probably contemporary with these neighbouring properties and fronting onto the road. Further evidence, in the form of postholes and floor surfaces with two possible hearths, was found for medieval structures attached to the rear of the main building. A post-medieval ditch, perhaps being part of a post-medieval structure, later occupied this part of the site showing that the earlier building had been demolished. 19th-20th century material was recovered, broadly contemporary with the occupation and demolition of two later buildings on the site that were demolished c.1900, and the sites subsequent land use as waste ground behind the Old Garage. The monitored area was heavily disturbed by the petrol tanks of the garage and no archaeology was seen.
