Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken by Exeter Archaeology during groundworks associated with the construction of a new toilet adjacent to the 7th tee at Teignmouth Golf Club, Bishopsteignton, Devon. The work was required as a condition of planning permission. Teignmouth Golf Course broadly occupies the southwestern portion of Little Haldon, a southern outlier of the hills that form Great Haldon to the north, and overlooks, from a height of some 245m.a.O.D., the mouth of the river Teign to the south. The geology comprises Eocene gravels over Cretaceous greensand, supporting heath with mixed birch and pine scrub. The proposed development comprises the construction of a single new toilet block 1.8m square, a 2m square septic tank, and a soakaway trench 500mm wide and 10m long, adjacent to the 7th tee. In all cases, groundworks exposed only c. 200mm of stoney heathland soil and heather root-mat lying directly on natural flint gravel. No archaeological features, deposits, or artefacts were present. |
