Abstract:
A desktop assessment was carried out in advance of a planning application for a large housing development. It updated a previous desk-based assessment and aerial photographic survey carried out in 1996. The assessment concluded that prehistoric remains were likely to be sparse but that there was high potential for Iron Age and Roman remains. A rectangular enclosure of probable Iron Age of Roman type was identified by aerial photography in the north of the site, and is interpreted as an enclosed farmstead. An Iron Age/Roman enclosed farmstead has been excavated on the opposite side of Ermine Street, the Roman road from London to York, which bounds the east side of the site, and other Iron Age and Roman remains are known across the general area. An earthwork along the original southern boundary of St Peter's churchyard may have been medieval, and medieval pottery suggests an area of abandoned settlement south of the church. A medieval windmill mound next to Ermine Street was identified by aerial photography, maps and documentarty records. Aerial photography also shows extensive evidence of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation across most of the site. Enclosure took place in 1818.
