Abstract:
The site lies to the west of Wembury and south of Down Thomas off Spring Road. The site is that of a WWII Heavy Anti-Aircraft battery constructed to protect the city and dockyards of Plymouth from air attack. The battery, which is well preserved, is protected as a Scheduled Monument (SM 33070). The trenching for a new electricity main running from the former stores building of the battery to Spring Road follows a course through the area of scheduling.A watching brief was therefore maintained during the excavation of the new electric main. The service trench was 200m long by 0.3m wide. It was on average 0.8m deep and it was observed to cut, along its entire length, through a thin layer of topsoil directly overlying natural subsoil.
