Abstract: |
The evaluation and excavation conducted within fourteen trenches along the route of the pipeline revealed significant evidence for the presence of archaeological activity. Tilbrook village had two phases of Middle to Late Saxon occupation west and north-west of All Saints Church which extended over more than 100m being identified within four of the trenches. The unregulated positioning of features suggests that a phase of replanning took place in the village in the later 11th century, providing the subrectangular gridded layout that can be seen today. Trenches excavated along the pipeline route between Tilbrook to Stow Longa revealed several previously unknown settlement remains. Evidence shows that a settlement existed during the Early to Middle Roman period covering an area of at least 400m. The area was reused as a settlement during the Early to Late Saxon period. The archaeological investigation at Church Lane, Stow Longa provided evidence for six phases of occupation/activity. These ranged from a bank which was cut by a Middle Saxon ditch through to the remains of a structure and cobbled surface which would seem to have been abandoned by the end of the 17th century. |
