Abstract:
The evaluation work, consisting of two trenches, revealed the presence of archaeological features although modern intrusions prevented investigation below the level of post-medieval deposits in one of the trenches. Surprisingly, the Late Saxon defensive bank was not identified within the investigated area, as had been expected before work began. The earliest dated features consist of two ditches possibly of a 12th century date. This was proceeded by pitting and then general ground makeup. The fiirst evidence for a structure on the site is probably of 13th century date in the form of a post-built structure which was replaced by a more substantial beam slot and post building. from the 14th to 16th century the area was used for rubbish disposal either in pits or as general ground make up. The site was re-occupied in the 16th century, and at a later date a building of flint construction was built against the St George's Street frontage. Modern buildings with cellars had been built against both the St George's and Calvert Street frontages.
