Abstract:
A large area of open countryside scheduled for development as a business park was subject to archaeological trial trenching, earthwork survey and a small geomagnetic survey. The area comprised 33ha. and was sampled by 52 linear trenches. Key finds within the area included a previously unrecorded Iron Age enclosed settlement (HER 7998). The remainder of the archaeological features identified were associated with the former medieval settlement at Low Newton Hanzard (HER 6674), these included a large boundary ditch (HER 7999) and structure (HER 8000) to the west of Low Newton Hanzard farm, a hearth/kiln to the north (HER 8001) and a ditch (HER 8002) and isolated pit or ditch terminal (HER 8003) to the east. To the south-west of the farm a surface spread of medieval pottery (HER 8004) was noted although no features were found in trial trenching of the feature. To the south of the farm were a number of surviving earthwork features including a holloway (HER 5478), associated lynchet (HER 8005) and possible enclosure (HER 8006). These were all subject to trial trenching. The field with the earthworks contained below ground remains of a medieval ditch (HER 8007), several midden deposits (HER 8008), a pit (HER 8009) and a spread of rubble from a demolished late medieval structure (HER 8010). Away from the medieval core, to the east, a large V-shaped ditch (HER 8011) was noted and interpreted as a former field boundary.
