Abstract: |
Watching brief monitoring the excavation of a drainage pipe trench at All Saints Church, Intwood, Norfolk. The church is a round tower church that probably dates to the 12th century, although a late Saxon origin cannot be ruled out. The course of the trench enabled an opportunity to the church tower foundations and related deposits. A deposit adjacent to the tower foundations may ahve the potential to date the construction of the tower; however this deposit yielded no artefacts or dateable material during the investigation. The watching brief also revealed a sequence of undated graveyard soils truncated by the foundations of a boiler room which heated the church in the recent past. This structure had been demolished and the rea backfiled. The area around the boiler room appears to have been re-excavated nd backfilled again at an even later date. No finds were retrieved during the investigation. |
