Abstract: |
An archaeological strip, map and record was carried out by Birmingham Archaeology at Trent Lane, Newark, Nottinghamshire, as a condition of planning permission. Planning proposals were for a new retail store with associated parking to the south-east, and service parking and garden centre to the north-east. The site and its environs were the subject of two desk-based assessments that suggested the potential for archaeology from several periods. Trial-trench evaluation identified Romano-British ditches and the south-western corner of a civil war defensive earthwork known as the King's Sconce. The earliest archaeological features identified during the strip, map, and record exercise were dated to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, and comprised enclosure ditches, several small gullies and an articulated skeleton with associated grave goods. Four post-holes located within the enclosure may represent the remains of a raised granary, but no dating evidence was recovered. Enclosure diches in the north-eastern corner of the site were subject to 100% excavation. Foundation trenches filled with mortar and stone at the southern end of the site may represent the robbed out remains of the medieval hospital of St. Leonard. The southern-most point of the King's Sconce was also identified as a ditch filled with redeposited mudstone. |
