Abstract: |
A desk-based survey and archaeological evaluation were carried out within a field at Cunningarth, near Wigton. The desk-based survey indicated that the proposed development lay within close proximity to a number of significant Roman period sites including Old Carlisle Roman fort. Six archaeological trial trenches excavated within the proposed development area identified one north-south aligned ditch and two east-west aligned ditches. The north-south aligned ditch had the kind of V-shaped profile typical of larger Roman period ditches and contained sherds of 2nd century Roman pottery and glass, while the east-west ditches remain undated. Similar ditches excavated by CFA at Burgh-by-Sands and at Burgh Road, Carlisle are thought to represent parts of Roman period field systems. |
