Abstract: |
It is presently unclear as to the origins of Lower Demesne farm although an 18th or early 19th century date might be suggested. Certainly, on the basis of cartographic and documentary evidence, it is possible to say that the present farm and barns were all in existence by 1844. The cow house is a later addition, and map regression analysis suggests that this is dated to the mid-19th century, with a construction date somewhere between 1844 and 1881. A possible lean-to store on the end of the cow house clearly identified on a 1907 map but evident from 1881 no longer survives. Similarly, a larger structure, possibly also a lean-to, adjoining the northern flank of the detached barn is no longer extant and historic maps provides evidence to suggest that both buildings were still in existence during the 1930s at least. |
