Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was conducted for the British Red Cross ahead of the redevelopment of the site of their former meeting hall for housing. Although there was an absence of medieval finds and therefore an absence of firmly dated medieval features, the form and construction of a well, wall foundation and a possible oven base strongly suggests a medieval date for these features. Their function is consistent with the type of features typically to be found towards the rear of urban burgage plots in the medieval period. A demolition layer sealing these features appears to represent a hiatus in the development of this site, with earlier structures being demolished and levelled and a large amount of topsoil imported to create a garden space, possibly in the 18th century. It appears that Little Walsingham may be a planned town centred on a broad market place, now mostly infilled, running the length of the high street, with the abbey precinct to the east and a series of regular burgage plots on its west side. The development site lies within one of these possible burgage plots. |
