Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was conducted for Norfolk County Council ahead of soil stripping prior to the construction of the contractors' compound for the Northern Distributor Route, known as the Broadland Gate. This involved the excavation of 33 50m long trial trenches. Seventeen of these trenches contained archaeology; two of these had been placed to coincide with known cropmarks, and one of these certainly located a ditch in the correct position to be this cropmark. Other trenches also contained ditches, many of which were aligned north-south and east-west, with one or two on different alignments, possibly of a different date. Some of the ditches show continuations across the site. The dating for the ditches is difficult, with few artefacts having been discovered. Other excavated features include a single post-hole, several pits, and natural features. The dating for all of these features is also sparse. Flint artefacts dating from the Mesolithic to the early Bronze Age were recovered from some of these features, along with a few tiny fragments of prehistoric pottery. |
