Abstract:
In 2008 Archaeology South-East undertook an archaeological watching brief at The Royal Military Canal, Rye during flood defence works. A shingle layer probably represented the former metalled surface of the canal tow path and a dark, silty deposit could have been formed by dredgings from the canal. The bank on the south-eastern side of the canal contained modern metal objects and no evidence of any previous bank or upcast from the cutting of the canal were visible. An area of disturbed alluvium could represent the fill of a shallow, cut feature or an area disturbed by trampling. A silent picket fragment appeared to have been screwed into the ground through this layer but underlying the topsoil and subsoil. The artefact probably dates to the Second World War and could have formed part of the defences that were put in place in this area. However, it may have been later re-used and was not necessarily found in its original position as a support for barbed wire. The natural geology of the site consisted of a mottled orange and grey alluvium with varying degrees of sand and clay content, overlying a slightly darker, greyish sandy clay. No further archaeological finds, features or deposits were observed.
