Abstract:
In October 2005, Archaeological Solutions Ltd undertook an archaeological excavation on land at Lodge Farm, Costessey, Norfolk (NGR TG 1650 1030). The excavation was undertaken in advance of the proposed development of the 18 hectare site, with two distinct areas being investigated based on the results provided from an earlier evaluation (Grant and Sutherland 2003). Within Area 1 of the site, a substantial Iron Age boundary ditch was aligned north-west to south-eastwards; the finds from the ditch are suggestive of a nearby settlement. A line of three post holes was discovered to the south of the ditch, and were aligned approximately parallel to the boundary ditch. A possible post hole a pit and five animal burrows were also recorded. Area 2 revealed a pit and two linear ditches. The latter was aligned N/S and parallel to one another, possibly forming field boundaries or a droveway. Also within the south-eastern corner of the excavation, late Bronze Age finds were discovered within the plough soil. These comprised two socketed axes, a fragment of a third axe, and a chape. A concentration of late Bronze Age metalwork had previously been found centrally in Area 2 of the site. Together the finds represent the remains of a dispersed hoard. After deposition of the late Bronze Age hoard, the archaeological features on the site thus predominately date from the Iron Age. The proximity of a dry valley, which was partially excavated in Area 2, may have acted as an enticement to settle the land in prehistory.
