Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out by M. J. Miles of Compass Archaeology. A service trench was excavated north-south across the Highway measuring c. 13.5m in length and 1m to 1.7m deep. The central and southern sections of the trench exposed a series of recent madeground/backfill deposits. The northern 5 metres of the trench was deliniated by two adjacent east-west brick walls and contained brick rubble. None of the exposed deposits were bottomed and the natural ground surface was not exposed. Reference to earlier OS maps (especially 1921) shows that the Highway was once much narrower and that the buildings to the north extended well over the present pavement and road. The walls and rubble noted above are likely to represent a cellar of one of these buildings, which may have been destroyed by wartime bombing. NB: the levels shown on the form below are the minimum and maximum depths of the excavation and not the level of natural in this area. |
