Abstract:
John Moore Heritage Services conducted an archaeological evaluation of land to the southwest of Malthouse Barn, Standlake on the 14th-17th April 2008. Oxfordshire County Archaeological Services, the archaeological advisory body to the Local Planning Authority, West Oxfordshire District Council, called for a pre-determination archaeological evaluation in order to make an informed decision on the planning application, (07/2242/P/FP), for the redevelopment. The proposed redevelopment of the area consists of demolition of the existing buildings at Malthouse Barn and the construction of five dwellings with garaging and associated services. Wychwood Homes commissioned John Moore Heritage Services to carry out the evaluation. Six trenches, totalling 79.6 metres in length, were excavated to the natural geology. Archaeological deposits mainly were confined to the Romano-British period along with two features of Anglo-Saxon date and comprised ditches, pits, and postholes. Evidence for earlier structures was present and these are probably dated to the post-medieval period.
