Abstract:
Oxford Archaeology carried out a recording of the north facing elevation of Chapel Court at Hampton Court Palace prior to masonry repair and cleaning work. The recording included full recording of the diaperwork decoration and mortars prior to raking out and after raking out was complete. The stonework of the south facing elevation that was to be repaired was also photographically recorded at this time. Using the Brick typology Data Sheets and analysis of the different mortar types it can be seen that there are many different phases of work upon the elevation. These include: The primary building phase under Cardinal Wolsey; the Tudor ruddling and diapering of the elevation; the replacement of the primary Tudor windows with casements in 1711; the decoration of the elevation with false diaperwork in the 19th century; the addition of the plinth to the base of the elevation and the replacement of the casement windows with perpendicular windows in the crenelations in the 1950s/1960s
